Project / Direction
A distribution is a set of decisions.
HORUS OS is an independent Arch-based Linux distribution in development, focused on a considered desktop experience, practical performance, and maintainable engineering.
Why HORUS OS?
Linux offers an extraordinary range of distributions, but most fall into established categories: minimal and unopinionated, or batteries-included with varying degrees of visual polish. HORUS OS explores a different position: deliberate engineering decisions combined with cohesive visual identity, without sacrificing maintainability or transparency.
This is an engineering project exploring how system architecture, desktop integration, and visual design can work as parts of a unified whole.
Foundation / direction
Arch Linux
HORUS OS is built on Arch Linux, leveraging its rolling-release model, comprehensive package ecosystem, and transparent build system. The base lets the project focus on boot workflow, desktop integration, and visual identity rather than maintaining an independent package ecosystem.
Niri + DankMaterialShell
The current desktop direction combines Niri, a scrollable-tiling Wayland compositor, with DankMaterialShell, a modern desktop shell. This direction is exploratory and may evolve as implementation reveals practical constraints or better alternatives.
Engineering philosophy
Deliberate decisions
Every choice—from bootloader to desktop shell—is made with clear reasoning and documented rationale.
Maintainable over convenient
Long-term maintainability takes precedence over short-term convenience. Stable, documented components are preferred over hidden complexity.
Honest communication
Development status is communicated accurately. Planned work is not presented as completed features.
System architecture
Boot and installation
Boot workflow uses Limine as the bootloader. The installation process is being developed to be predictable, well-documented, and easy to validate.
Desktop integration
Desktop integration focuses on making Niri and DankMaterialShell work together cohesively, with consistent keyboard navigation, predictable workspace behavior, and visual continuity across system components.
STATUS / IN DEVELOPMENT
